So sometimes what happens is you hear this song on the Internet, sung by this very young writer, and you think, “Wow, she’s pretty amazing,” so you follow her on Twitter (back when you used to be on Twitter) and it turns out she’s a total musical theater girl who already follows you, so you DM her to tell her you think she’s great and you have a brief conversation about hey-maybe-we-could-make-music-sometime and that’s all that you expect to come out of that, and then you show her stuff to your daughters and they go full-on bananas and become obsessed with everything she writes and sings, and this is happening at the same time that about two million other people become full-on bananas obsessed with her because she writes this huge viral monster hit that every girl between the age of 16 and 30 puts as the background to a TikTok video, and at some point, you realize that you’re going to be doing a concert in Los Angeles and you think it would be fun to invite her to come sing some songs with you, and miracle of miracles, she’s actually going to be in town and she’d actually love to do it, and boom, she sneaks in to a club in Hollywood (the same club that Ariana Grande snuck into seven years earlier) which seats about 20,000 fewer people than she’s used to performing for, and she soars heartbreakingly through two of your songs and you have a new friend and collaborator. That’s what happens sometimes.
Also, you get to play with some of your favorite LA musicians in front of a warm, wonderful crowd who cheer you through your weird throat infection and make you glad you came back to your old adopted hometown after a long time away.
