A revised production of 13, the recent teen-targeted Broadway musical from Tony-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, will receive its first post-Broadway production at Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars in September.
The TUTS production, running Sept. 10-12, will follow the blueprint of the Broadway incarnation of 13, which employed a cast and band composed of teens. Auditions will be held in Houston April 25-26 for actors and for young musicians on April 26 and May 3.
Prior to its Houston premiere, Tony-winning composer Brown and 13 librettists Dan Elish and Robert Horn will test out a revised version of the coming-of-age musical at the French Woods Performing Arts Camp in Hancock, NY this summer. Brown informed Playbill.com that he and his collaborators “loved the show we put on Broadway, but felt that 13‘s future life would be well served by taking one more shot at certain sections of the piece, particularly those sections that might not make as much sense to an audience outside of New York City.”
Following the summer test run, a finalized version of 13 will be available for licensing from Musical Theatre International. That version will premiered at the Theatre Under the Stars as part of its Apprentice Conservatory Training at the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre.
Press notes for the Broadway run of 13 read: “Evan Goldman has it all — he’s popular, has the perfect family and lives in the greatest city in the world — New York. That is until his parents get divorced and he’s forced to move with his Mom… to Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, he has to make new friends and somehow maneuver his way through the minefield of High School to become part of the ‘in-crowd.’ A grown-up story about growing up, featuring the only all-teenage cast ever to hit Broadway!”
13 was developed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and Goodspeed Musicals’ Norma Terris Theatre in Connecticut. The musical premiered on Broadway Sept. 16, 2008, and ran through Jan. 4, 2009.
