I have spent this week at John Kilgore’s studio in midtown, with my treasured collaborator Jeffrey Lesser, recording the band tracks for what will be (eventually!) my second solo album. It is the longest sustained period of music-making I’ve had in quite some time, and it was challenging and terrifying and always glorious and wonderful and the most fun thing. Some of us were discussing today how the kind of reckless bravado you need when you’re in your twenties in order to stake a claim as a New York musician can seem unimaginable once you’re in your forties and beyond – I’ve done lots of sessions before, but I started every day this week feeling like I wasn’t really up to the task of playing my own music. And yet by the end of every day, I’d listen back to the work we did with such pride and gratitude. I’m very excited for you all to hear what we’ve started cooking up – it’ll be a while (still have to record the orchestra and the vocals!) but already I can tell you there’s a lot of love in them grooves, courtesy of my fellas: Gary Sieger, Randy Landau, Jamie Donald Eblen, Justin Goldner, Benny Koonyevsky and Todd Reynolds. Maybe I shouldn’t wait twelve years before I start my next album…
