ls exclusief nieuwjaarscadeautje voor de bezoekers van Musical Fan wilde de redactie een hele speciale, internationale ‘In de schijnwerpers’. Daarom is contact gezocht met één van de succesvolste schrijvers van de nieuwe generatie musicalmakers. Met ‘Songs for a New World’, ‘Parade’ en ‘The Last Five Years’ heeft deze tekstschrijver/componist prachtige voorstellingen geschreven die ook onder Nederlandse musicalliefhebbers erg goed gewaardeerd worden. TV-programma
Ik kijk eigenlijk geen tv behalve in uitzonderlijke gevallen, bijvoorbeeld als er een vriend of een grote gebeurtenis te zien is. Soms kijk ik nog wel eens een aflevering van een werkelijk vreselijke Amerikaanse serie genaamd ‘She-Spies’. Het is een soort ‘Charlie’s Angels’ en staat bekend als één van de grootste verboden genoegens van de 21ste eeuw.		 TV Program
I actually don’t watch television, except on some rare occasion when a friend is on or some major event is happening. I’ve also been known to occasionally watch an episode of a truly horrific American show called ‘She-Spies’, which is a rip-off of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ that ranks as one of the great guilty pleasures of the 21st century.

Waarschijnlijk ‘North by Northwest’, ‘Annie Hall’, ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ of ‘Top Hat’. Gezien de onderwerpen van mijn eigen musicals is het waarschijnlijk verrassend dat mijn smaak zo escapistisch is, maar zo is het nou eenmaal. 		Film

Waarschijnlijk ‘West Side Story’ maar ik heb een zwakke plek voor ‘Wonderful Town’ en natuurlijk ben ik dol op ‘Sweeney Todd’ en ‘Sunday in the Park with George’. Nu we het er toch over hebben, mijn favoriete toneelstuk is al jaren ‘Arcadia’ van Tom Stoppard. Ik was ook weg van ‘The Waverly Gallery’ van Kenneth Lonergan maar omdat ik bij de originele productie betrokken was, mag die eigenlijk niet meetellen.		 Musical
Probably ‘West Side Story’, but I have a huge soft spot for ‘Wonderful Town’, and of course I love ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Sunday in the Park with George’. By the way, my favorite play has been Tom Stoppard’s ‘Arcadia’ for many years now. I did love Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘The Waverly Gallery’, but I contributed to the original production, so that probably shouldn’t count.

Ik zou niet weten waar ik moet beginnen. I couldn’t begin to choose. I’ll deliberately pick something obscure so people will seek it out: Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh wrote an amazing song called ‘I Walk A Little Faster’, I don’t think it’s from a musical show but theater folk will love it.

De tour van ‘Parade’ begon in het Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Het is een grote schuur, 4.000 stoelen, de akoestiek is verschrikkelijk en het toneel is veel te ondiep, maa
r ik denk dat het de meest romantische plek op aarde is. Opgesmukte muren die doen denken aan ‘Arabian Night’ en kleine elektrische sterren in het plafond. Als ik omhoog keek, voelde het alsof ik in Addis Ababa een openluchtvoorstelling stond te dirigeren. 		Theater
We started the tour of ‘Parade’ at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a huge barn, 4000 seats, the acoustics are terrible, the stage is way too shallow, but I think it’s the most romantic place in the world, all these hokey ‘Arabian Nights’ designs on the walls and little electronic stars in the ceiling, so that when I was conducting I could look up and feel like I was conducting an outdoor concert in some mythical Addis Ababa.

Bij welke musicals ben je betrokken geweest?
Mijn eigen musicals ‘Parade’, ‘Songs for a New World’ en ‘The Last Five Years’. Die van anderen: ‘Urban Cowboy’, ‘John and Jen’, ‘A New Brain’, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’.		 My own: ‘Parade’, ‘Songs for a New World’, ‘The Last Five Years’. Others: ‘Urban Cowboy’, ‘John and Jen’, ‘A New Brain’, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’.

Wat was de eerste musical die je zag?
Toen ik zeven jaar was, zag ik ‘The Wiz’ op Broadway maar om eerlijk te zijn, kan ik me er weinig van herinneren.

 What was the first musical you ever saw?
I saw ‘The Wiz’ on Broadway when I was seven. I don’t really remember much about it, to be honest.
Wat was de laatste musical die je zag?
De laatste goede musical die ik zag, was ‘Our House’. Ik was er zo verrast en opgewonden van dat ik meteen een fanbrief naar Matthew Warchus geschreven heb. Dat is één van de weinige keren dat ik zoiets gedaan heb. Tegenwoordig is de muziek in de meeste musicals zo saai dat ik niet echt geïnteresseerd ben om veel te gaan zien. 		What was the last good musical you saw?
The last good musical I saw was ‘Our House’, which I was so surprised and thrilled by that I ran home and wrote a fan letter to Matthew Warchus, which counts as one of the very few times I’ve ever done anything like that. In truth, the music in most musicals is so dreadful these days that I’m not interested in seeing very much.
Wat is je meest memorabele blunder tijdens een voorstelling?
Ik heb nog nooit een blunder gemaakt tijdens een voorstelling (Ha ha ha ha ha ha!) 		What is your most memorable performance blunder?
I’ve never made a blunder in a performance. (Ha ha ha ha ha ha!)
Wat doe je tijdens de pauze van een voorstelling?
Bij de meeste shows zit ik in het orkest. Tijdens de pauze staat het hele orkest op en doen we een wedstrijd wie het eerste bij het toilet is.		 Well, for most shows I’m playing in the orchestra, so at intermission, the entire orchestra gets up and races each other to the bathroom.
Je bent één dag een gezaghebbende producent.
Welke beslissingen neem je?
Als het maar voor één dag is, dan is het niet mijn zorg dat de investeerders hun geld terugverdienen. Ik zou afdwingen dat alle shows die ik produceer gebruik moeten maken van een 45-koppig orkest en dat elke synthesizer verbrand wordt.

Well, if it’s only one day, then it’s not my concern whether the investors make their money back, so I would force all of the shows I’m producing to use thirty-five piece orchestras and set every synthesizer on fire.

Hoe belangrijk zijn musicalfans voor je?
Degenen die verstand hebben van muziek en van theater houden, zijn heel belangrijk voor me; degenen die enkel van de showbusiness en beroemdheden houden, zeggen me niets.

 The ones who know music and love theatre are very important to me; the ones who just love the ‘show-biz’ and celebrity bits are no good to me at all.

Wat zijn je plannen voor de (nabije) toekomst?
Dat weet ik niet, ik zal waarschijnlijk nog wat meer musicals gaan schrijven. Er staan wat dingen op het vuur die steeds meer gaan borrelen dus daar zal je snel genoeg iets over horen. Ik wil hoofdzakelijk genieten van mijn familie en enkel werk doen waar ik trots op kan zijn.

 What are you planning to do next?
I don’t know, I guess I’ll write some more shows. I’ve got a couple of things on the burners that are starting to come to a boil, so you’ll hear about those soon enough. Mainly, I want to enjoy my family and do only work that I can be proud of.
