Oh, it was a good one last night.  Tom Kitt and I have known each other for more than a decade, and we’ve been making music together since he covered me on Urban Cowboy The Musical. But last night was the first time we’ve performed onstage together, and it was a fantastic party.

Two pianos, two fantastic guest singers, an outstanding band featuring the otherworldly Todd Reynolds, and twelve songs from two guys who love making music and love making musical theater.

That’s How Texas Was Born (from Urban Cowboy)

And for the finale, a two-piano, all guns blazing, full-on Billy Joel Songspiel.  For Jewish piano-playing boys growing up in New York in the 1970s, Billy Joel is as close to religious text as you can get – you can hear some of my wingding interpretations of the Billy Catalog here – so last night, Tom and I got to worship in high style.

Only The Good Die Young

Stiletto

I’ve Loved These Days

The Ballad of Billy the Kid

The band:
Piano and vocals: JRB
Piano and vocals: Tom Kitt
Electric and acoustic guitars: Michael Aarons
Electric and acoustic guitars: Gary Sieger
Electric and upright bass: Randy Landau

Thanks as always to Marc and Steven and the whole gang at SubCulture for giving me a fantastic home and for helping make these nights, which have been so meaningful to me, happen in such grand fashion.
