I Wish I Didn’t Love You

I came to this city, my hat in my hand,
To earn just enough for my own piece of land.
I got caught by the one thing that I never planned.
I wish i didn’t love you at all.

I came to this city to stake my own claim,
To look for my future, to hide from my shame.
Now I’m stuck here with less than I had when I came –
I wish i didn’t love you at all.

I wish I’d been stronger, I wish I’d been smart.
I wish there was some way to know,
But all those wishes won’t heal my heart
Or tell me where I should go.

I came to this city, and I thought that I knew
All the hurting and lying that people could do,
But I never knew nothin’ until I met you.
I wish i didn’t love you at all.

I came to this city and dove in too deep.
I got tripped up by promises you couldn’t keep.
And if somebody else picks me up when I fall,
Well, I’ll just close my eyes,
Believe all the lies,
And wish I didn’t love you
At all.
