Parade debuted fifteen years ago this month at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, and everything about my life changed because of it. In this clip, just posted to the Masterworks Broadway site, the director Harold Prince talks about the show, the score, and the original cast recording. I had no idea this interview existed until a friend alerted me to it on Facebook – I’m so moved hearing Hal talk about the show and the work we all did. It was a magical experience for me, and I’ll never stop trying to be worthy of Hal’s praise.

My favorite moment in that original production of Parade occurred in the middle of “That’s What He Said,” where the horror of what is happening during Leo Frank’s trial was intensified by Harold Prince’s brilliant change of stage perspective.
I agree with everything that Mr. Prince says about your work (and who am I to argue with Harold Prince?). Based on your scores for Honeymoon in Vegas and The Bridges of Madison County, he is right that you just keep getting better. “It All Fades Away” is an incredibly beautiful and moving song written by a composer who is mature enough to be unafraid of simplicity.
