Yesterday, principal photography wrapped on the film version of The Last Five Years, adapted and directed by Richard LaGravenese (the writer of one of my favorite movies of all time, The Fisher King), and starring the luminous Anna Kendrick and the magnificent Jeremy Jordan.
(Sadly, I wasn’t around for the end of the shoot, but it’s for a very good reason: I’m up in Williamstown MA, rehearsing the world premiere production of The Bridges of Madison County, for which you can get tickets and info by clicking here.)
I’ll be talking about this movie a lot in the next year, but today I just wanted to link to Broadway.com’s gallery of photos from the last day of shooting, where you can see Anna and Jeremy working on “Goodbye Until Tomorrow,” supported by Richard, DP Steven Meizler, and the particularly fetching on-set music supervisor.
The next step is editing the movie, and then I’ll go into the studio this fall to record the enhanced orchestrations as well as any new underscoring that might be needed. An amazing team is putting this movie together, and I’m very honored and also kind of geeking out about it.

As a huge fan of the show, I’m really looking forward to the movie. I’m fascinated by how the forwards/backwards chronology will translate into the less abstract medium of film. I keep trying to picture how the transitions between scenes will be handled (are title cards too blunt?), and how the time reversal during the Central Park rowboat scene will work.
I’m curious about the mention of “enhanced orchestrations.” I love the original orchestrations, which add so much to the mood of the piece. Are we talking about just a few more strings, or are we going to add drums or even brass?
As I’ve now made clear, I’m also geeking out about it!
[FROM JRB: Larry, all things will be revealed in time!]
In the last (one) year, the amount of lovely that has enveloped L5Y is sensational! After seeing the impeccable direction of the Second Stage rendition, with Adam and Betsy (and YOU), I’m more than thrilled that the show will be commemorated with a film. Particularly with the talent associated with this picture! If I squint, just enough, Jeremy can be the mensch of my dreams!
I won’t ask too many questions– since, while they crowd my mind, I don’t want to spoil the magic!
I’m so proud to say I’ve loved you forever and I hope that, as you become even more of a star, you remember the theatre nerds, who listen to “If I Didn’t Believe in You” to get through the tough times and sing “I’m Not Afraid of Anything” when they are most petrified, with an extra bit of love.
Keep us posted! xox
Completely and totally awesome.
