Yes, it’s true, the 2012 JRB Karaoke Competition is now closed to any further entries. You can hear all 694 renditions by going to the JRB Karaoke Group on SoundCloud.com. I am amazed and honored by all the submissions that came in over the last three weeks. Already I have heard some extraordinary talent, people who absolutely transform my work by singing it. It’s really exciting.

Other than the one step I’ll talk about in a second, you’ve done all you can do for right now – the next phase of the competition is for me and the judges. None of us expected quite this many submissions, and it’s going to take us a while to get through them, but that is what we’re going to do. It’s my intention to listen to every single one of the entries, and several of the other judges plan to do so as well (and have already started). I imagine that’s going to take about a month. So you’ve got until August 1st to relax and enjoy your summer. As I know more, I’ll update via Twitter and this blog.

Here’s the last step: Below is a list of everyone who Tweeted their submission to me. Go through this list and make sure you find your name; then make sure your name is under the appropriate state or country. If your name isn’t there, it might be because you tweeted from a “protected” account, which means that for some reason I couldn’t see it, so you should make your account “public” for one tweet, retweet your entry link to me, and then you can go back into hiding. If there are any problems with this list, just note them in the comments below and I’ll contact you to figure out what went wrong. Rest assured, if your entry got posted to SoundCloud before 11:59PM PST on July 1, you’re in contention. (And if your entry didn’t get posted before then, you’re not.)

Finally, someone asked me if I’m really listening to every track from beginning to end. No, not every track – as with auditions, I can tell pretty quickly what people are going to bring to the party. Often, I’ll start at the beginning and then “needle-drop” through the song to see if there are any surprises. However, I am surprised at how often I’ve felt compelled to listen to a track all the way through; I’m not just bullshitting you here, a lot of you people are ridiculously gifted.

I’ve been working my way through the entries from the very beginning – if you go to the last page of the JRB Karaoke group, you’ll start seeing my comments on each track. You’ll know I’ve heard yours when you see that I’ve commented on it. (You should check your tracks over the next couple of days to see if I flagged them for not having a tweet or not being part of the group.) Sometimes I make pretty detailed comments, but most of the time, I’ll just write a short acknowledgement so you and the other judges know I’ve heard it. One of the things I’ve loved most about this competition so far is seeing all of your comments on other folks’ songs – the little SoundCloud community that’s been forming is really beautiful; I’m grateful to have been able to facilitate that.
