A beautiful afternoon in a gorgeous backyard in the Pacific Palisades with a fantastic band and sensational singers, all as a benefit for the Festival of New American Musicals. A lot of firsts for me: my first concert with a full band in LA, my first outdoor concert (at least since college), and my first time getting a cake brought to me on stage at the end of a show by my wife and daughter. Many thanks to Bob Klein, Marcia Seligson and Linda Shusett for choosing me as this year’s honoree and for allowing me to put this show together.

A Little More Homework (Graham Phillips & The Theater Geeks of America)

And what a joy for me, at a concert celebrating my 40th birthday, to look out in the audience and see not just my family but friends from New York, from college, from summer camp – thank you all for coming! (They shot video at the concert, so hopefully I’ll be able to post some soon!)

Jason, I’ll be sure to tell Linda and Marcia to get you the footage ASAP. Thanks for a great afternoon!

JRB! When are you coming back to NY?! It’s killing me to see all the shows on the west coast and midwest.
[FROM JRB: Soon, I hope! Nothing’s on the calendar just yet, but I think there will definitely be something this winter.]
Okay, this might be INCREDIBLY nerdy of me but … wasn’t Kevin Dukes a guitarist in Billy Joel’s band in the late ’80s?
Can’t wait to see video from this gig!
[FROM JRB: He was indeed! Check him out at 1:46 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_ugePvB82Q ]
How wonderful that you had such a memorable birthday. This is my first post on your blog, but I’ve been a huge fan for the last 10 years or so. I’m a pianist and I’ve had the pleasure of playing most of your printed material (I’m sure you’ve got manuscripts of unpublished music all over the place).
My fiance is a singer and when he feels like busting one out it is always either you or Adam Guettel (but mostly you). He had a chance to see one of your performances in NY back in 06 and I’m still jealous that I didn’t get to share that experience with him.
We are in Chicago now and you’re definitely on our radar. Hope you’ll head our way soon.
Thank you so much for all of your wonderful and inspiring work, and happy 40th!
