’13’ Won’t Reach Maturity On Broadway

It’s proving an especially difficult season to be a teenager on Broadway. Producers have announced a closing date for the musical “13,” the other Broadway show about the struggles of adolescence (this one set in present-day Indiana rather than 19th-century Germany, as “Spring Awakening” is). It will play its final performance on Jan. 4 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. The show features music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The Last Five Years”) and says it was the first on Broadway to have an all-teenage cast and band. The cast recording was an online hit, but “13” never quite caught fire like “Spring Awakening,” which has also announced its closing on Jan. 18, having had 29 previews and 859 performances. When “13” ends its run, it will have had 22 previews and 105 regular performances.
