Following the huge success of Sunday in the Park with George at the Menier Chocolate Factory and in the West End, Menier Chocolate Factory Productions are delighted to present the much anticipated UK premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s break-through one act musical.
The Last Five Years is a show about a marriage. It is told from two angles: from the man’s point of view it starts at their first meeting and ends in the present, when the marriage breaks up. From the woman’s point of view, it starts in the present and works back in time to the first meeting. Only at the wedding, in the centre of the piece, do the stories intersect.
The relationship is between a ‘nice jewish boy’ and an Christian girl in New York City. During a five year period, they fall in love, marry and their relationship gradually sours and they finally divorce.
Jason Robert Brown is Tony winning author, for his score to Parade in 1999, a musical written with playwright Alfred Uhry and directed by Broadway legend Harold Prince. His off-Broadway Songs For A New World was a huge cult hit and his reputation in the UK has been boosted by two sell out shows at the Players Theatre in the last year. His score for The Last Five Years is hugely imaginative, full of variety, humour and inventive orchestration.
The cast for The Last Five Years features Lara Pulver and Damian Humbley. Lara has appeared in the national tours of Miss Saigon (as Ellen), High Society (as Dinah), The Boyfriend (as Maisie), Chicago (as June), Honk! (as Henrietta), and productions of A Chorus Line (Bebe) at the Sheffield Crucible and the Wizard of Oz (Dorothy) at the Oldham Coliseum. She also appear in the West End production Grease playing the role of Frenchie. Damian Humbley is an Australian born performer who moved to the UK in 2005, only months after arriving he was cast opposite Ruthie Henshall as Walter Hartwright in The Woman in White at the Palace Theatre. In Australia he appeared as Billy Boy Bill in Urinetown (Melbourne Theatre Company) and Giorgio Bachetti in Passion (for Halogen Productions).
